Making the Demogorgon hand
The Demogorgon hand was for a interactive advertisement display for O2 in Central London.
The hand had to fit around a billboard of a mobile phone as if it was holding the phone.
The hand was 12 meters long by 6 meters high.
We had to make this hand in sections due to its extreme size.
First of all we plotted each section and carved it out of polystyrene using hotwires, serated knives and wire brushes.
Once we had each section carved we coated them in a dark grey pigmented epoxy resin and woven glass fibre to give it a hard shell. We added bits of polystyrene to the resin in some places to give it a bumpy texture. Once the resin was applied to the surface of the polystyrene we used sculpting tools to mark scaley skin like lines into the wet resin.
For the nails/claws of the beast we simply used a smooth black pigmented resin togive it a smooth shiny effect.
Once the resin was dry we painted textures and highlights into the skin to give it a more realistic effect.
we had to piece together the hand on sight using scaffolding poles to hold it firmly in place. We used a thickened pigmented resin mixture to fill in any gaps that may have appeared in the joinings of the different sections.
